Saumaize-Michelin Macon Vergisson Sur La Roche 2020

Roger and Christine Saumaize, together with their son, Vivien, own the finest estate of Vergisson in the heart of the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. Their 14 hectare domaine has been cultivated bio-dynamically since 2005 and the vines are now naturally lower-yielding and disease-resistant. As a result of the 40-45 years average vine age, and the patchwork of marl resting on limestone subsoil, the wines show a wonderful complexity. The wines are vinified in the cellar adjacent to the Saumaize house at the top of the village, with fermentation taking place in 20% new oak barrels using only indigenous yeasts.

Part of La Roche vineyard that extends outside the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation. This section is at higher altitude and faces north so in the past has been considered less good, but with climate change, this cooler site often gives fruit with more bite and minerality. A lovely, elegant wine, with opulent fruit and fine harmony.
